Between 2008 and 2020, Kentucky’s local health departments lost over 50% of their workforce. Core programs—WIC, maternal health, harm reduction—were stretched thin.
And now, with Medicaid and public health cuts in the latest federal budget, hundreds of rural hospitals are expected to close. The safety net is shrinking.
But one program is stepping up.
Kentucky Public Health AmeriCorps (KYPHA), from the Kentucky Health Departments Association, is placing 75 AmeriCorps members across the state. Trained as Community Health Workers, they’ll serve directly in:
WIC nutrition support
HANDS home visiting
Harm reduction services
Health education and outreach
They’re not a replacement for doctors or nurses.
They’re the connection point—trusted, consistent, community-based.
Why it matters:
KYPHA is pushing forward.
They’re adopting the Impact Suite to reduce paperwork and reclaim time—to lead, not just survive.
And in a time when rural communities are losing hospitals, losing access, and losing staff…
KYPHA is investing in systems to allow members to spend more time showing up for patients — instead of showing up for clunky AmeriCorps timesheets, stalled impact reports, and scattered member files.
If your AmeriCorps program is ready to rethink how it runs—if you want to spend less time on worry and more time on impact—we’re here. And if we’re not the right fit, we’ll send you to someone who is.
Whether it’s with us or with another parter, let’s free up at least 20 hours a month for you. You totally deserve it, as does your community.
