Welcome to the New York City Coalition Against Hunger!

We’re so excited to welcome the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) to the America Learns community!  The organization’s AmeriCorps*VISTA program is investing in all components of the AmeriCorps Impact Suite.

NYCCAH, in conjunction with some of the nation’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations, is beginning its fourth year of the Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps (AHOC), a 32-state, 128-member VISTA project sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service and the Walmart Foundation. AHOC engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in NYCCAH’s mission of “moving society beyond the soup kitchen” by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods via benefit utilization, including SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , formerly known as Food Stamps), the Summer Food Service Program and other USDA FNS programs.  AHOC VISTAs work with anti-hunger organizations in building their capacity and sustainability to ensure programs continue long after the VISTA members’ term.

Projects include:

– Writing grants and/or assisting in fundraising activities;

– Recruiting, training and managing volunteers;

– Convening community members to survey effectiveness of programs; train organizational staff to provide nutrition education outreach;

– Enhancing awareness of programs by engaging community members in educational opportunities; and

– Much more.
