In early April 2025, Frankfort, Kentucky, faced one of its most severe flooding events, with the Kentucky River cresting at 48.3 feet—the second-highest in the city’s history. Amidst the rising waters and community upheaval, AmeriCorps members, coordinated by Serve Kentucky and the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky, emerged as pillars of resilience and hope.
These dedicated individuals swiftly mobilized to support the flood relief distribution center, ensuring that affected residents received essential supplies and assistance. Their efforts exemplify the spirit of service and the critical role AmeriCorps plays in disaster response and recovery.
Serve Kentucky, the state’s service commission (and one of the 15 commissions using the Impact Suite), oversees more than 25 AmeriCorps program grants, channeling over $14.8 million in federal funds to support community service initiatives across the Commonwealth. Their mission—to engage Kentuckians in volunteerism and service to positively impact communities—was vividly brought to life through the actions of these AmeriCorps members during the flood crisis.
As Frankfort embarks on the path to recovery, the unwavering commitment of these service members stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring spirit of community.
It’s such an honor to serve both Serve Kentucky and HHCK as they strengthen communities statewide. More reasons to #SaveAmeriCorps.
