The AmeriCorps program at Girl Scouts of Western Washington is designed to address the following needs:

  • Lack of accessible troop models in communities where caregiver volunteerism is unavailable. Traditional Girl Scout troops are based on youth meeting regularly in small groups run by parent volunteers. However, this model is not accessible in communities where caregiver volunteerism is unavailable due to work schedules, cultural differences, or lack of resources.
  • Diversity and representation in Girl Scouts. The lack of accessible troop models in certain communities disproportionately affects girls from underrepresented backgrounds. This is because these girls are more likely to have caregivers who are unable to volunteer, and they are also less likely to be aware of Girl Scouts or to have access to it.

The AmeriCorps program aims to address these needs by:

  • Creating new troop models for communities where traditional volunteerism is financially impossible or culturally inappropriate. AmeriCorps members will work with community organizations to recruit and train adult volunteers to lead Girl Scout troops in these communities.
  • Growing and diversifying the Girl Scout membership. AmeriCorps members will recruit and enroll girls from underrepresented backgrounds in Girl Scouts. They will also provide training and support to these girls to help them succeed in the program.
